Belardo's Sire Line Continues to Fire

logo

With the breeding season just around the corner, spring is in the air and with it, the prospects of a bright future for Haunui Farm’s young stallion, BELARDO (Ire) (Lope De Vega).

A Champion 2YO, dual G1 winner and, G1 performer at 2, 3 & 4YO, BELARDO ticks all the boxes for racetrack performance. The fact he is out of a stakes performed DANEHILL mare, ticks another box. But arguably the biggest tick of all goes to his sire line – LOPE DE VEGA, SHAMARDAL and, GIANT’S CAUSEWAY.

When announcing BELARDO in 2017, his sire, LOPE DE VEGA boasted a total of 26 stakes winners including four G1 winners. Today, those figures stand at 59 and 9, headlined in the Southern Hemisphere by five-time G1 winner, SANTA ANA LANE. And just this weekend, he sired his third stakes winner in New Zealand from just ten starters when ENDLESS DRAMA ran out an impressive winner of the G2 Foxbridge Plate off the back of a G1 placing in the Stradbroke in Queensland. And in the North, grand sire SHAMARDAL continued to add to his tally with another Group winner over the weekend.

BELARDO is the only son of LOPE DE VEGA at stud in Australasia. He’s served over 200 mares in his first two books at Haunui and his first crop yearlings are set to hit southern hemisphere sale rings in January 2020. He’s standing his third season at Haunui Farm in 2019 at a fee of $12,000 + GST. If he can follow in the footsteps of his sireline, those astute enough to support him, will be in for one heck of a ride.
