Stallion analysis
General Comments
Over the years we have analysed the pedigrees of a large number of quality racehorses. Invariably their pedigrees exhibit particular attributes that can be pinpointed as likely to have played a major part in producing these superior performers. Such pedigrees fall into several distinct categories.
The first is the pedigree containing very specific affinities, often peculiar to a particular racehorse. These are usually quite close up in the pedigree.
The second is the pedigree containing multiple reinforcements in unusual quantities of a highly influential ancestor.
Lastly, the pedigree contains particular clusters of ancestors that can be a focal point for reinforcement in identifying broodmare sires.
Specific strengths of the pedigree of Elusive City
In the case of Elusive City’s pedigree, he has a particularly versatile pedigree which fits into the second of the categories outlined above. In particular, his pedigree contains multiple reinforcements of Native Dancer, along with more reinforcements of Discovery, the damsire of Native Dancer, with Mr Prospector well reinforced quite close up through male and female ancestors.
It is noted also, that Hero’s Honor in the pedigree of Elusive Quality descends through the La Troienne female line, one of the most influential lines in the stud book. In addition, the dam line of Gone West introduces his granddam, Tamerett, offering another strong candidate for reinforcement through prospective broodmare sires. In addition, the second damsire of Elusive Quality is Sir Ivor, a particularly strong influence when duplicated in pedigrees particularly through male and female ancestors.
At the risk of being repetitive, I will mention again that we have included a number of stallions in the lists below which may not have made the grade in their role as stallions. Breeders have become used to viewing stallions in terms of their commerciality, or fashionability, for want of a better word. But when a stallion is in the position of sire of a broodmare, he is no longer subject to the fickleness and irrationality of breeders, and his pedigree characteristics are given an opportunity to show through, perhaps regardless of a mediocre performance as a stallion.
So a very high proportion of top racehorses are out of mares whose sires were not necessarily the most popular stallions with breeders when assessed in that role.
There are countless examples, and from recent years we find that English Derby winner New Approach has Ahonoora as his damsire; Authorised, Saumarez; Sinndar, Lashkari; Oath, Troy; Generous, Master Derby; and English 2000 Guineas winner George Washington, Alysheba.
I therefore believe it worth emphasising, that what seems to count is the compatibility of a broodmare sire’s pedigree, not his superficial fashionability when he stood as a stallion.
Category 1: Broodmare sires with Native Dancer in their 3rd or 4th generation.
Alquoz offers an excellent example of the efficient reinforcement of Native Dancer, and as a bonus Dr Fager is also strongly reinforced through female ancestors, and the direct female line of Hero’s Honor is also well reinforced through the presence of Caerleon also from the La Troienne female line. Alquoz has much to offer as a broodmare sire for Elusive City.
Ad Valorem reinforces both Native Dancer and Intentionally in good position.
Danehill reinforces Native Dancer twice over in his fourth generation, and also introduces a reinforcement of the La Troienne’s female line through Buckpasser.
A variation on this theme can be seen with Rainbow Quest, where Raise A Native, a son of Native Dancer, is reinforced through male and female ancestors in good position.

Savabeel is representative of quite a large number of broodmare sires by Zabeel that introduce Sir Ivor in optimum position.
Kaapstad offers another good example, where Sir Ivor is strongly reinforced through male and female ancestors.

Category 3: Broodmare sires with ancestors which reinforce the direct female line of Hero’s Honor in their pedigree.
Carry The Crown is an example of an outstanding candidate, in that not only is the direct female line of Hero’s Honor reinforced through Cohoes in his fourth generation, but also Intentionally and Tamerett, the sire and dam of Tentam, (the damsire of Carry The Crown), are reinforced in perfect position. In addition, Native Dancer is strongly reinforced through Natalma, the dam of Northern Dancer. Examples of other opportunities for reinforcing the direct female line of Hero’s Honor are set out below.

The example with Carry The Crown has already been introduced above, but there are a number of other potential broodmare sires that also fit the bill. In addition, this same female line can be reinforced through Welsh Flame (example Marju), Parthia and Atan (example of both, College Chapel). Piccolo reinforces Tamerett in good position along with Intentionally and Raise A Native, both also in optimum position.
