Stallion analysis
General Comments
Over the years we have analysed the pedigrees of a large number of quality racehorses. Invariably their pedigrees exhibit particular attributes that can be pinpointed as likely to have played a major part in producing these superior performers. Such pedigrees fall into several distinct categories.
The first is the pedigree containing very specific affinities, often peculiar to a particular racehorse. These are usually quite close up in the pedigree.
The second is the pedigree containing multiple reinforcements in unusual quantities of highly influential ancestor.
Lastly, the pedigree contains particular clusters of ancestors that can be a focal point for reinforcement in identifying broodmare sires.
Specific strengths of the pedigree of Don Eduardo
In the case of Don Eduardo’s pedigree, this is absolutely typical of a successful Zabeel mating. In particular the pedigree contains strong reinforcement of Hyperion and his female line, together with other reinforcements of the direct female line of Nasrullah and his three-quarters brother Royal Charger, and also such notable ancestors as Sir Cosmo, Djebel, and Friar’s Daughter.
It should at this point be mentioned that we have included a number of stallions in the lists below which may not have made the grade in their role as stallions. Breeders have become used to viewing stallions in terms of their commerciality, or fashionability, for want of a better word. But when a stallion is in the position of sire of a broodmare, he is no longer subject to the fickleness and irrationality of breeders, and his pedigree characteristics are given an opportunity to show through, perhaps regardless of a mediocre performance as a stallion.
So a very high proportion of top racehorses are out of mares whose sires were not necessarily the most popular stallions with breeders when assessed in that role.
There are countless examples, and from recent years we find that English Derby winner New Approach has Ahonoora as his damsire; Authorised, Saumarez; Sinndar, Lashkari; Oath, Troy; Generous, Master Derby; and English 2000 Guineas winner George Washington, Alysheba.
I therefore believe it worth emphasising, that what seems to count is the compatibility of a broodmare sire’s pedigree, not his superficial fashionability when he stood as a stallion.
Category 1: Reinforcing the female line of Don Eduardo
In view of the strengths identified above, the fact that Royal Charger and his sister Tessa Gillian are reinforced in the pedigree of Don Eduardo, combined with the fact that reinforcement of a stallion’s female line is often a notably successful strategy, a good starting point would be to identify those broodmare sires that achieve just this.

Category 2: Broodmare sires with Sir Tristram as their damsire.
The pedigree of Sir Tristram is saturated with a number of those ancestors that would appear to make Zabeel such a successful stallion. In view of this, reinforcement of Sir Tristram himself, particularly through female produce, would emphasise these strengths. Category 5: Reinforcement of Relic through female progeny
One of the most influential ancestors in the stud book is Relic, and he appears quite close up in the pedigree of Don Eduardo, close enough to warrant selection of broodmare sires containing him through female produce in their pedigrees. Conveniently, this is mainly achieved through broodmare sires by another prolific stallion, Bletchingly, whose damsire is Relic (it is interesting to note that Kingston Town , whose sire was Bletchingly, appeared to inherit his black colour from the only black ancestor in the first six generations of his pedigree, Relic) :-

Provided we do not end up reinforcing Sir Tristram or Sir Ivor in male/male situations, reinforcement of Princequillo quite close up will have a positive influence on any pedigree.
